Lansdowne student garners accolades in International Peace Poster Competition

Izzy Ojao, a Grade 7 student from Lansdowne Public School, has garnered accolades for her artwork submitted to the Sudbury Teachers’ Lions Club International Peace Poster Competition. This year’s theme was “Peace Without Limits”.

The Sudbury Teachers’ Lions Club, like other Lions Clubs, sponsors the International Peace Poster Contest, which encourages children ages 11 to 13 to express their vision of peace through art.

In addition to winning first place at the local level, Izzy’s poster captured first place in the Northern Ontario region, and will move on to the next level in the competition.

“This is the first time that someone from Sudbury has ever won the poster contest at the Northern Ontario level,” said Principal Elisa McNeil. “We are so proud of Izzy.”

Izzy Ojao’s poster, which expresses peace through art, combines dark and light colours.

Izzy first heard about the competition through art teacher Jessica Lloyd, who introduced the contest as a classroom assignment. “I love art, so I was very excited about this project,” said Izzy. “I was inspired by my dad. I really like his paintings and I want to be just like him.”

She added: “For my poster, I wanted to use dark colours on one side of the earth to show the wars with bombs, fires and nature burning, and bright colours on the other side to show peace, freedom and happiness that comes when a war ends.”

Sudbury Teachers’ Lions Club member Catherine Somerville visited Lansdowne Public School on March 27, 2025 to present Izzy with a $250 cheque.

“I am so grateful for this money,” said Izzy. “I used it to buy supplies so I can continue my art and maybe one day I will be lucky enough to sell my pieces.”

“On behalf of the entire school community, I extend sincere congratulations to Izzy for her creativity and passion for the arts,” said Principal Elisa McNeil. “We wish her the very best as the competition progresses.”
